Black plum (Indian Blackberry) or Kala Jamun aka Jam is hardly abundant throughout the year and you can find it mainly during the monsoon months, that too for few days in between. Although I am not a big fan of Jamun, must admit that it has an interesting taste swinging between sweet and sour sans the slight bitterness. Moreover, it has plenty of health benefits as well, like fights against diabetes, improves digestion, helps in weight loss etc. You can check the details about Jamuns, here.
I learnt the recipe of black plum juice from my mother-in-law who surprised me once with the thick rich tasty juice which I liked immediately. And I never thought the jamuns can be turned into such a delicious and kicking drink. Which attracts me most is the vibrant colour of the juice. A bit of effort needed to squeeze the juice out of the fruits which is worthy given the outcome. Try and get surprised.
Resting Time : 30 mins.
Preparation Time : 30 min.
Difficulty Level : Easy
Ingredients for 6 juice glasses :
- Black Plum (Kalojam/kala Jamun) – 500 gms.
- Salt (or rock salt) to taste
- Sugar to taste
- Water – 1 liter
Procedure :
- Wash the black plums or jamuns well with water after bringing them from market.
- Then coat them well with 1 teaspoon of salt and 2 tbspoon of sugar. Keep them aside for atleast 30 minutes. It is better if you rest them for longer time.
- After that, as the jamuns become soft, squeeze them with hand to separate the pulp from the seeds. Discard the seeds.
- Then transfer all the jamum pulp in a blender and add 700 ml. of water. After blending well pass the lequid through a strainer and collect in a jug or container.
- Again transfer the remaining pulp, in the strainer, to the blender and blend with 300 ml. of water.
- As before strain the juice and collect in the same jug or container.
- Finally check for salt and sugar. Add them directly into the jug, if needed, and stir with a spoon to mix well.
- Then you can serve the juice immediately or refrigerate it to serve cold.
Note :
- If you want your juice to be more thick or light then adjust the amount of water accordingly.
- Skip adding sugar if you want to get the complete benefit of the fruit.

I like Jamuns a lot but the availability is not very good here in Pune. I can eat a cup full in one sitting 😁😉
Very nice recipe. Thanks for sharing.

Great to know that you like jamuns. It is very good for health. Honestly, I don’t like it much. That’s why choose this alternate version 🙂 I just love the colour of the juice. In Delhi also, Jamuns are hard to find, may be only in July or August.
